Welcome! Thanks for visiting Compliance Beyond Borders, a website where I share Compliance best practices and regulatory updates from the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union, with a focus on anti-bribery and corruption, sanctions, and anti-money laundering. My interest in financial crime regulation stems from the 2008 financial crisis. Try as I might, my college student brain simply could not understand how the government regulators had failed to prevent the calamities unleashed by the banking sector's subprime mortgage practices. Weren't these institutions supposed to be regulated? Didn't they have sufficient government oversight? My curiosity led me to apply to law school, to intern with the Securities & Exchange Commission, and to focus on white collar defense during my first legal jobs.
This blog is my way of commenting on developments in the financial crime space, both from a government regulation and compliance perspective. I hope to add to the conversation amongst Legal and Compliance professionals and, at the very least, developing this blog will serve as a great writing exercise!
